Пол Дж. Макоули (Paul J. McAuley) (встречается тж. неправильное Пол Макуоли) родился в 1955 году в Великобритании. Английский ботаник, писатель-фантаст, сам о себе говорящий как о "фанатике науки" (science junkie). Окончил университет в Бристоле, получил диплом по биологии, специализировался на ботанике и зоологии. В 1980 году защитил диссертацию по ботанике. В 1984 году Пол Дж. Макоули дебютировал как писатель, опубликовав рассказ «Wagon, Passing». В 1988 году вышел первый его роман — «Four Hundred Billion Stars», принесший автору премию имени Филипа Дика и положивший начало масштабной серии — к этой книге примыкают романы «Of the Fall» (1989) и «Eternal Light»«Вечный свет» (1991). На сегодняшний день у Пола Дж. Макоули опубликовано 16 романов и около полусотни рассказов, лучшие из которых составили сборники «The King of the Hill» (1991) и «The Invisible Country» (1996).
