В детстве увлекался классическими произведениями («Робинзон Крузо», «Питер Пэн» и др.) и комиксами. В 1976 окончил высшую школу Бинга (Бинг, Оклахома), а позже получил высшее образование со степенью бакалавра в английском языке, окончив Восточный Центральный Университет (Ада, Оклахома).
